It’s generally the four-legged variety facing the starting line but on Sunday they were merely playful onlookers as 340 current and former Australian Defence Force members and their families braved the elements to represent RSL NSW in the City2Surf.
The record contingent was proudly supported by official sponsor Greyhounds As Pets, jumping at the opportunity to get behind such a meaningful cause.
“It’s an absolute honour to forge this association with RSL NSW,” Greyhounds As Pets CEO Steve Griffin said.
“When the opportunity arose there was no hesitation from our organisation. It’s an Australian thing to do anything you can to help those who have served our country, and it is great to be able to have some of our retired greyhounds with the competitors, both before and after the tough 14km run.
“This was the first occasion we have worked with the RSL NSW and we have made it clear that we would love to continue the partnership.
“As many would know, retired greyhounds make wonderful pets, and this is another avenue we are looking at with retired servicemen and women.”
While the weather wasn’t obliging, it did nothing to dampen the spirits of the day, with the attendance of some retired greyhounds brightening up the morning.

“Aren’t they just beautiful animals,” said Debbie Kinnane from Hurstville.
“I must say in all my years this is the first time I’ve come past a greyhound and can’t believe how relaxed and well-natured they are.
“Especially in the middle of town in the hustle and bustle of City2Surf day. Just adorable.”
With RSL NSW continuing to do important things across its vast network, Sunday’s City2Surf brought together seasoned runners, recreational joggers, and even Sunday walkers, all focused on crossing the finish line together, each stride a testament to the enduring bonds of service and mateship.
“The agreement with Greyhounds As Pets supports veterans and their families while promoting the adoption of retired greyhounds into loving homes,” RSL NSW said.
“Their commitment to carefully match each dog with the right person, and providing ongoing support, reflects the same spirit of care and connection that defines the veteran community.
“Our City2Surf team embodies the true meaning of mateship, supporting every participant, every stride, and one another, just as we have always done in service and in life.
“Our sponsorship with Greyhounds as Pets is a powerful reminder that the RSL NSW community is built on care and connection, for our veterans, their families, and the animals we welcome into our homes.
